There are some travelers who are dressed in business suits, others in traditional jeans, and others who wear something as comfortable as possible, such as their pajamas or sweat pants. With the recent increase in airport security and changes in air travel rules, there are many individuals who wonder if the clothing they wear to the airport is important.

Whether you’re taking a long flight or a short haul, you’ll want to be comfortable. There’s nothing worse than wearing an itchy sweater or tight pair of pants up in the air. That’s why it’s important that you think of what you will be wearing before you leave for the airport. Even if you’re traveling for business, you might want to change into your business clothes as soon as you arrive at your destination, even in the airport bathroom.

When it comes to comfort, many air travelers make the decision to wear sweat pants and a comfortable top. In addition to being comfortable, you will find, in most cases, that these types of clothes are the best for airport security, especially when entering screening checkpoints. This is because most sweat pants don’t have any metal accessories. Essentially, this means that you should be able to enter the security checkpoint and leave it more quickly than other travelers who are decked out in accessories.

When it comes to clothing accessories, you will find that a number of different items set off airport metal detectors. That’s why most airport security officers request that you remove all of your jewelry. Once your jewelry is removed, you will need to place it in a small bin, which will be scanned along with your carry on luggage. Whether you have rings or a necklace, you’re advised to remove them, if you can. For your convenience, you can leave your earrings on. If by chance, you earrings set the metal detectors off, you will likely be pulled aside and airport security should easily be able to tell whether or not your earrings were what set off the alarms.

Even your belt may set off an airport’s metal detector, and so a large number of airports have requested that you remove your belt before entering the metal detectors. Since a large number of travelers wear belts, this is done to help speed up the process of checking each and every passenger. If you’re not comfortable removing your jewelry or belt in public, it’s advised that you leave those items in your luggage.

Recently, a number of new air travel rules have been implemented. One of these rules requires that all passengers remove their shoes. Your shoes, once removed, will be scanned by an x-ray machine along with the rest of your carry on luggage. In the past, only random passengers were asked to remove their shoes, but now everyone is. For that reason, you’ll want to wear simple shoes that you can easily remove and put back on.

Another air travel rule, recently implemented, is the ban of liquids. One concern of some women is the allowance of gel or water filled bras. Currently, you’re allowed to wear these types of bras onboard an airplane. Honestly, unless you mention it to airport security, there is a good chance that they would never even know.

Since there are really no rules or restrictions on the clothing that you can wear while flying the great skies, you need to choose for yourself. Whether you want to be fashionable or comfortable, it’s all up to you.

When you think of items that are banned on airplanes, what first comes to mind? If you’re like most individuals you would say sharp objects. Of course, sharp objects are banned on all airlines, but did you know that there is a long list of other items? In fact, many of these items are things that you may have never given thought to before. Here are some vacation packing tips that should help you avoid problems on your next trip.

First of all, it’s important that you know there is a difference between carry on luggage and checked luggage. Carry on luggage is the bag, backpack or duffel that you carry and keep with you at all times. Your checked luggage is the baggage that will be stored on the airplane, out of your reach.

When examining items that are prohibited aboard an airplane, remember that some items are not completely banned. While a large number of items may not be allowed in your carry on luggage, there are some that will be allowed in your checked luggage.

In 2006, a new ban on liquids in your carry on luggage was imposed due to security threats. These liquids include beverages, liquid or gel based beauty supplies, and food with a liquid or gel based substance, as well as aerosol products. However, you may carry small amounts of these substances if you follow these rules:

Products must be in three-ounce or smaller containers.

They must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag.

You must remove the bag from your carry on and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening.

There are exceptions for baby formula, breast milk, and other essential liquids, gels, and aerosols, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines. Check with your airline before packing for up-to-date information.

In the event that your vacation includes some recreational sports, you will need to check your golf clubs and other sports equipment, no matter how much you want to keep them by your side. Equipment banned as carry on luggage includes bows, arrows, bats, golf clubs, ski poles, pool cues, hockey sticks, and lacrosse sticks. So if your sports equipment is expensive, make sure that it’s properly packed to prevent damage.

The majority of tools are also prohibited from being included as carry on luggage. Banned items, which must be stored in your checked luggage, include axes, crowbars, saws, drills, and hammers.

Sharp objects are not allowed aboard the plane in your carry on luggage, including knives, swords, box cutters, and ice picks. The only exception is scissors that have blades shorter than four inches.

If you must travel with any of the above mentioned items, you need to plan ahead and store them in your checked baggage. Since you don’t pass through airport security checkpoints until after your baggage has been checked, this means that if you are caught with a prohibited item in your carry on luggage, in most cases, it will be too late to have that item rechecked.

Instead, you will most likely end up having to hand it over to airport security, never to see your item again. When it doubt, check it or leave it at home. That’s the best way to ensure that you don’t lose anything of value.

When it comes to airport security checkpoints, there are many passengers who only think of one checkpoint, but the reality is that there are actually three.

The first checkpoint is when you arrive at the airport and go to the check in counter for your airline. You will need to show the proper form of identification, most commonly a driver’s license, passport or a government issued identification card. Once the agent confirms your identify, you will be presented with your boarding passes.

Next you will need to hand over your luggage. Your baggage will most likely be checked for prohibited items before it is loaded on the plane. In the past, only a small number of bags were hand checked, but now almost all are. Many of these checks are quick look-overs, but you may be subject to a random, extensive search. This search often includes checking all baggage compartments, as well as wiping your suitcase with a special device to check for for powdery substances.

When you have been cleared to the next stage, you will go through the main airport security checkpoint. This point is where you will be required to have your carry on luggage scanned by an x-ray machine. You will also need to walk through a metal detector. In the past, only random travelers were asked to remove their shoes for checking. At the current time, all air travelers, with the exception of those with a disability or debilitating medical condition, are required to remove their shoes. They will be x-rayed along with your carry on luggage.

By familiarizing yourself with the items that are banned aboard an airplane, including items that are prohibited from being stored in your carry on luggage, an unnecessary incident could be prevented. In the event that you are found carrying a prohibited item, certain steps will be taken. Depending on the item in question, you may be required to return the item to your car, discard it, mail it to your home, or turn it over to airport security. Ensuring that you leave all prohibited items at home is the best way to prevent this unnecessary tie up, which may cause you to miss your flight.

Once you have been cleared at the main security checkpoint, you will need to go through one final check before boarding your plane. After it has been announced that passengers may board the flight, you will need to present your boarding pass. At this time you may need to show your identification again; however, it isn’t always necessary.

Most travelers are easily able to board their airplane, but some may be pulled aside in the event that they are acting suspiciously or drawing unwanted attention to themselves. That is why it is best that you stay calm during all airport checkpoints, including the final boarding stage.

The best way to ensure that your next flight is as pleasant as it can be is to follow all air travel rules. Knowing these rules ahead of time, including the screening process, should ensure that you are able to board your plane and make it to your intended destination without incident.

Airline tickets can be expensive no matter how you look at it. You might as well explore every option available to see if you can get some good airline ticket deals.

You see advertisements for cheap airline tickets all over the place. They saturate the internet, television, and newspapers, and for good reason. Nobody wants to pay $800 for an airline ticket when they can get something pretty similar for half the price or less.

Websites are the easiest way to find a good airline ticket deal. There are hundreds to choose from with their own unique way of giving you the best deal available. Cheap airline tickets have become a business all their own with fare comparison sites, auctions, and bidding sites.

Fare comparison sites are usually the first stop for people looking to buy cheap airline tickets. These sites check prices from many different companies that offer the flight you are looking for. This will give you a ton of options if you are traveling from a large city to another large city but if you are traveling somewhere fairly small, you might not have many options at all.

To get better results and cheaper tickets, you can change the arrival and departure dates by a day or two to see if the prices go down. You can also include airports in nearby cities. Though inconvenient, you can save quite a bit of money by skipping your local airport and using one in a larger city nearby.

Auction sites frequently offer cheap airline tickets that are almost too good to be true. This could be because the person who has the tickets had a change of plans, or due to some type of promotion.

If you make an offer on one of these sites, always start low and increase in $35-$50 increments until your offer is accepted. If you go lower than that, you might miss your preferred departure date. Clear your cookies between visiting the various sites or they will know what your previous offers were and may not give you anything lower.

The most important tip to buying airline tickets online is to know your itinerary. Make sure you know exactly when you want to leave and where you are going. If you need a round trip ticket, make sure that’s what you specify.

Most websites let you type in where you are leaving from and where you are going and then choose dates on a calendar. This is very easy to use even for someone without much internet experience.

Another tip is to know all the extra fees involved and determine if your tickets will be sent to you or if you can just pick them up when you get to the airport. Having them sent to you can be a pain if the mail doesn’t show up for some reason so it is best to leave them at your airline’s ticket counter. When you arrive at the airport, you just tell them your name, check your baggage, and then you’re off.

Always read the fine print on websites. You don’t want to pay extra or have to wait six hours at three different airports to get where you are going.

Research in advance or check upon arrival to find out where the closest hospital, pharmacy and or clinic is, just in case.

Insurance coverage is essential. Not only travel, medical and cancellation insurance, but for valuables that will be accompanying you on the trip. It’s worth the small expense when weighed against the replacement cost should they get misplaced, forgotten or stolen.

Guard your identity and travel documentation. Proof of identity and citizenship is essential when traveling out of the country. Make two copies of your important documents, including your credit cards and passport. Keep one with you at all times and deposit the other in a safe place or leave it with a friend or family member or the hotel safe. Never lose sight of your passport, and if it is stolen, report it immediately.

Check out travel and health advisories for the region you will be visiting. Visit your doctor prior to your trip to get any required or recommended immunizations. Find out what basic and special medicines to take along. Ensure you know what to do in case of an emergency.

If you have to travel with medicine, it’s best to carry it in the bottle the prescription came in to avoid any problems during customs inspections. A note from your doctor to state what it is and what condition it is used for could be helpful. A copy of your prescription could be of value to you, especially on an extended trip.

Find out in advance who to call in case your checks or credit cards are lost or stolen. It will save you time and money and minimize the impact of lost, misplaced or stolen cards, wallets and travelers checks.

Know the foreign currency exchange rates. You can find out any of the current exchange rates in real-time on the internet, from your bank, and or by contacting private currency exchange companies.

Carry proof of purchase or receipts for any high-tech equipment you are taking with you. This will avoid problems when clearing customs.

One of the most common mistakes made by travelers is packing too much of everything. Airlines will charge you for overweight luggage, or they might not even let it on the plane. Think minimalism when packing. Choose items that are functional, multi-purpose, mix and match, durable and easy-care.

Pack a clean set of underwear and one change of clothes in your carry-on luggage, as well as a few basic hygiene items, in case your checked luggage is misplaced, delayed or, worse, stolen!

Arrange for house sitters while you are away. Ask a neighbor or close friend to keep a watchful eye on your behalf and drop in from time to time to water plants, shovel the driveway and collect mail and newspapers. Leave your itinerary with your friends, relatives, neighbors, or co-workers in case they need to contact you.

Learn as much as you can about your destination before you depart. Read any information you can find on what you should know before departing, such as facts, warnings, advisories, entry requirements, crime statistics, demographics, local economy, attractions and special events.

Check the admission price and operating hours of tourist attractions before departing. It can be very disappointing to find things closed when you expect them to be open.

Verify your luggage allowance and flight details. Always check in advance on the amount of luggage you may take. Planes, trains and motor coaches all have regulations regarding amount and size of luggage. It can save you a lot of embarrassment, expense, and aggravation.

Arrive early at the airport and allow enough time for security screenings and clearing customs. Try getting to the airport at least two hours before your flight time on domestic flights and even earlier on international flights.

Planning and spending your travel dollar wisely is a priority for most people. Curbing spending and costs, while still enjoying your vacation to its fullest, is the key to a successful journey and fiscal responsibility.

When budgeting for any type of travel, find out all the costs associated with your trip. Confirm the charges with your travel agent, tour operator or hotel. Read the fine print and avoid surprises. Ask about alternatives, package deals, discounts, coupons and special offers – if you don’t ask, you might never know. There is always room for negotiation and or innovative ways to cut costs and still have a memorable trip.

Try these tips to save money on your next trip.
Family Travel: Hotels and Packages

Hotels

Check if your hotel has a loyalty program for frequent guests.

Ask about package deals.

If attending a conference, ask for the delegate rate.

Explore options other than hotels: B&B’s, sublet or short-term lease agreements.

Continental breakfasts included in the hotel rate are a great money-saver for large families.

In The Air

Explore online offerings, comparison shop and book with discount airlines if advantageous. Having some flexibility regarding dates and times will translate into savings.

Enroll in an air miles, reward or frequent flyer plan that includes discounts on hotels and car rentals.

Timing is everything. Avoid peak periods. For example, holidays, spring break, and business hours make for more travelers en route, and supply and demand will dictate pricing – usually higher. Take advantage of shoulder and low season travel periods.

Book flights at least two weeks in advance. The closer the booking to the flight date, the more expensive it will be.

Log on to the airline’s website and check out unadvertised flight specials. Booking on-line usually saves a few dollars.

Use a park-and-fly service and park your own vehicle at the airport. Driving your car there and back is much cheaper than a taxi if you live far from the airport. There are also airport bus services or shuttles that are cheaper than taxis.

Never eat at the airport. Airport food is twice the price of food anywhere else. Try to eat before arriving or pack a few snacks to tide you over until you reach your destination.

Once on the ground, ask the information desk about free shuttles to your hotel or use public transit.

Transportation

Travel passes for public transportation are a good deal and can save you a lot of money.

Taxis are convenient but rarely worth the price. If you do hire a taxi, consider asking someone to split the fare with you.

Food

Carry some handy snacks with you. This could include raisins, nuts, cheese and crackers, small foil envelopes of tea and coffee, and fresh fruit. Instant breakfast drinks might also help to replenish and re-energize when you need it most. It will save you money and help you to eat more healthfully while you’re traveling.

Another money-saver is a travel accessory often overlooked: a lightweight plastic flask filled with water or juice.

Even if your personal budget is extremely tight, you can still take a break and enjoy a getaway. A nickel and a dime here and there will save dollars in the end.

Your flight is booked, you’ve taken your luggage out of storage and you’re ready to pack. But what exactly should you put into your suitcase? Read these tips to help you get packing.

Shop for the items you need several days before your trip to avoid last minute convenience buying.

Dollar-store plastic bottles filled with products like shampoo and liquid soap will go a long way to save you some money. Buyers beware of travel size items. Typically, you do not find these items economically priced. Soap dishes and toothbrush cases are also handy items to store your wet bathroom utilities in, thereby keeping your clothes dry.

Invest in a customized mini drugstore with basic items like aspirin, band-aids, antacids, and cold remedies. When in need, the hotel convenience store or local pharmacy prices can be astronomically and notoriously over-priced.

Back-to-the-basics: always have an extra pair of socks, pantyhose, and underwear somewhere. Be prepared for anything and everything, including delays. If there are delays on your return trip, for any reason, it is reassuring to know that you will at least have fresh undergarments to wear!

Pack wisely and include a couple of extra outfits. Hotel dry-cleaning is expensive and having a quick change of clothes for a spill or other inevitabilities is always a good idea. Packing more than you need seems to be the rule of thumb.

Liquid laundry soap can be a good investment for clothing that needs a little spot cleaning or laundering. Hand washing it in the sink will also save you a few dollars while en route.

A trusted toiletry bag, ready to go and stocked with all you might need, is always a good idea. Having your toiletry and bathroom essentials ready at all times will reduce the likelihood of forgetting something important like your toothbrush and having to buy one.

Here’s a basic packing checklist. Feel free to add or subtract depending on your destination and planned activities.

2 pairs of pants

3-4 shirts

A dark-colored sweater to wear en route

Clothes for a dressy occasion, for comfort while traveling and suitable to the climate

One sport-jacket for men (some restaurants require them)

Swimsuit

Cover-up for beach or pool

Raincoat

Cap or sun hat

3-5 pairs of underwear

5 pairs of socks – cotton or wool

Sleepwear

1 pair of sturdy well-broken in boots or sandals

For winter travel: down jacket, waterproof boots, gloves, hat and long underwear
